The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited, NLNG, is to commission six world class science laboratories in six federal univeristies across the country in December.
General Manager, External Relations of the company, Kudo Eresia-Eke, disclosed this Friday in Lagos during a visit to Independent Communications Network Limited, publishers of ThNEWS/P.M.NEWS.
Dr. Eresia-Eke, who was accompanied by the company’s Head, Media Relations, Anne-Marie Palmer-Kuku, said NLNG donated N340 million to each of the six universities to construct the laboratories to boost science education in the tertiary institutions.

The universities are, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Maiduguri, University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria and University of Port Harcourt.
The company also built a Vocational Centre in Bonny for N3 billion which is recognised by the London City and Guild which also has a partnership with the centre.
According to him, NLNG, is planning to build a model school in Bonny, its operational base, at the cost of N4.5 billion at the request of the Rivers State Government.
He said the company, which instituted the annual prizes for Literature and Science, is passionate about support for education because it is the bedrock of a nation’s development and hopes other corporate entities would take a cue from NLNG by discharging their corporate social responsibility to their host communities.
Eresia-Eke further stated that the dry dock being constructed in Badagry was a project being undertaken by two South Korean companies, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries, adding that it was not an NLNG project but a gesture by the two companies for getting a $1.6 billion contract to build six ships for NLNG.
He said prior to the setting up of the company, 70 per cent of the gas from drilling activities in the Niger Delta was flared by oil companies but now NLNG mops up the gas into liquefied natural gas and flaring has reduced drastically to 11 percent.
He said NLNG buys gas from the depots of Total, Agip and Shell and pipes it to its plant in Bonny about 100 kilometres away.
He spoke about the role the company is playing in Nigeria’s scio-economic development, like the recent $1.3 billion tax it paid to the Federal Government which was disbursed as bailout to the state governments.
Eresia-Eke thanked Bonny, the host community, in Rivers State for the conducive atmosphere it has created for the company to operate, adding that it was for that reason that 90 percent of its corporate social responsibility projects such as social amenities are within Rivers State.
NLNG is the largest single investment in Africa, with over 90 percent of its staff members being Nigerians trained abroad, as well as all the eight-member management team.
It is the 4th biggest company in Nigeria, after Shell, Chevron and Mobil, and employs thousands of Nigerians.
