President Muhammadu Buhari has come up with the first key appointment in his cabinet, amid speculation surrounding his ministerial list.

According to Premium Times, Buhari broke the news about who would head the ministry of petroleum on Tuesday, September 29, in New York in the course of the Global Leaders’ Summit on Countering ISIL and Violent Extremism.

Uwazuruike to UN: It’s time to carve out Biafra from Nigeria

ONITSHA—Leader of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, yesterday, gave what he termed as genuine reasons the United Nations should allow Biafra to be separated from Nigeria.

One of the reasons, he stated, was that the population of the former Eastern state, now South East and part of South South that make up Biafra land can currently boast of over 10 million people, adding that the Biafran people naturally do not share similar culture and tradition with Hausa-Fulani of the North and Yoruba of the South West as to continue to remain together under one country called Nigeria.

According to Uwazuruike, another reason was that MASSOB, as a separatist group, had all it takes to run a sovereign state of Biafra, having had enough instruments, structures, flag, currency, coat of arms and defence to assume a status of an existing government.

Uwazuruike, who spoke to newsmen, yesterday in Onitsha, Anambra State, through MASSOB’s Deputy National Director of Information, Mazi Chris Mocha, ahead of the on-going UN General Assembly, renewed his call on the world body to accord a recognition to Biafra as a sovereign state, just as it did to South Sudan which had been accorded a sovereign status since July 9, 2011.

Federal Ministry of Health yesterday received the last batch of Nigeria’s Ebola rescue teams from Sierra Leone and Liberia.

The documents were handed over to Senate President Bukola Saraki after plenary yesterday.

The president’s letter detailing the ministerial nominees came just as 83 senators passed a vote of confidence on the embattled Senate president, amidst drama that almost turned the plenary to a rowdy session.

The motion co-sponsored by 83 Senators made up of 48 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and 35 members of the All progressive Congress (APC) signaled the beginning of the drama as senators struggled to outwit one another during the debate on the confidence vote.

The decision by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is seen as part of efforts to check incidences of oil theft, but now seems to be scaring away vessel owners from the nation’s waters to lift crude oil.

A report by Reuters quoted oil traders and shipping brokers as complaining that a newly implemented “letter of comfort” requirement from Nigeria, under which vessel owners must sign a guarantee that their ships will not be used for theft has made it more difficult and expensive to load Nigerian crude, putting some buyers off.

NIGERIA has assured that it would respect bilateral relations between her neighbouring countries of Togo, Benin Republic and Niger Republic, and promised not to renege on existing agreements to supply electricity to the three countries.

But the Community Electric du Benin (CEB) has been advised by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, (NERC) to be ready to pay commercial rates for electricity supplied to it by the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

Chief Olu Falae Has Been Kidnapped

Chief Olu Falae, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, was kidnapped during the early hours of the morning by unknown gunmen.

The former Secretary is 76 year, he was said to have been abducted from his farm in Ondo state. Mr. Falae, was also Nigeria’s former minister of finance.

Since his retirement from service, the former minister had lived in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

Mr. Falae was last seen during the remembrance of ‎the late Gani Fawehinme held at Adegbemile Cultural Centre in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

Nigerian woman nabbed for shoplifting in US

A Nigerian woman, Akudihor Jennifer has been nabbed for stealing goods worth over $2,000 at Macy Oak Park Mall, in Johnson County, United States.

Akudihor, who traveled to the United States with her three children on a holiday, was arrested after a CCTV footage showed her stealing over 50 different items including clothes and accessories which she hid under the stroller as she tried to make her way out of the shopping mall.

Akudihor whose passport was seized has been charged with felony with and bail set at $2,500.

According to the spokesperson for the Overland Park Police Department, Sgt. Gary Mason, “…she was very apologetic and remorseful, and that does go a long way, so I think it does help in this situation.”

NLNG to commission 6 world class science labs in 6 varsities

The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited, NLNG, is to commission six world class science laboratories in six federal univeristies across the country in December.

General Manager, External Relations of the company, Kudo Eresia-Eke, disclosed this Friday in Lagos during a visit to Independent Communications Network Limited, publishers of ThNEWS/P.M.NEWS.

Dr. Eresia-Eke, who was accompanied by the company’s Head, Media Relations, Anne-Marie Palmer-Kuku, said NLNG donated N340 million to each of the six universities to construct the laboratories to boost science education in the tertiary institutions.

The Federal Government has concluded plans to reimburse a total sum of N535.5 billion expended by 21 states of the federation in repairing federal roads across the country.

This was disclosed by Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun state governor, who briefed State House Correspondents after a meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) chaired by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

Amosun said “Another issue discussed is on refund of expenses incurred on repair of federal roads by states.

President Muhammadu Buhari said, Wednesday, in Paris, France, that he opposed a further weakening of the naira and openly endorsed the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN’s policy of restricting foreign-exchange trading.

The President, who was answering questions in an interview with France 24 broadcast, said: “I do not think it is healthy for us to get the naira devalued. The Central Bank is providing ample foreign exchange to essential services, industries.”buhari-Naira

CBN has been under pressure from foreign investors to further devalue the naira. Nigeria had, last year, devalued the naira to N197 to the dollar from N160. The naira was further adjusted slightly in July to N199 to the dollar. As a result of the continued pressure on the naira, CBN introduced some measures to curb the excess demand for foreign exchange.

El Rufai shuts down 2 churches, Seminary, church hospital

KADUNA – Governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna State has orderd the immediate closure of two churches, a seminary and a church-owned hospitals and secondary school all in Saminaka, Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
He said the closure was to avoid the eruption of violence among factions of the congregations whose leaderships’ positions he described as, “principally to preserve their personal interests with little concern for the common good, and the peace and security of Kaduna State”.

Saudi to give families of dead pilgrims N70m each

Families of the six Nigerian pilgrims who died in the last Friday’s crane collapse in Saudi Arabia’s grand Mosque will get N70 million each.

They will also be entitled to two Hajj slots each next year to be fully paid for by the Saudi government.

The custodian of the two Holy Mosques, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud on Tuesday ordered that top officials of the Saudi Binladin Group be banned from traveling outside the kingdom after the probe of the incident partially blamed the construction company for the crane crash.

The Saudi authority announced that families of each of the 111 people who died in the accident will be paid a compensation of one million Saudi Riyals.

One Saudi Riyal is the equivalent to N70.

Saudi local newspaper, Arab News, reported that ‘King Salman ordered the payment of the following to the families of the victims: SR1,000,000 to the family of each person killed in this accident; SR1,000,000 to each injured whose injury resulted in permanent disability; SR500,000 to each of the other injured.”

According to the report, such payment would not deprive the families of the deceased and the injured from claiming for private right before the competent judicial authorities.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai today in Kaduna reiterated the commitment of the military to end insurgency within the three months deadline given by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Buratai spoke with journalists after declaring open the Nigerian Army Finance Corps tenth Biennial Training Conference in Kaduna.
He gave the assurance that with the achievement recorded so far, certainly there is hope that Boko Haram will soon be history.

Prominent Northern leaders, Tuesday, rejected the implementation of the 2014 report of the National Conference convoked by former President Goodluck Jonathan, saying that it did not address the key issues affecting them.
In its place, the northern leaders are asking President Muhammadu Buhari to convene a fresh conference that would take into cognisance the challenges facing them and proffer solutions to them.
The northern leaders who are mostly former political office holders under the aegis of Northern Reawakening Forum (NRF) and headed by a former member of the House of Representatives, Mohammed Kumalia, said it would be wrong for Buhari to implement the report of the conference called by the former leader.
The group, which met in Abuja on Tuesday, issued a strong view on the last conference, and asked for the dumping of the report in the interest of Nigeria.

We’re already negotiating with B’Haram, says Buhari

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has finally laid to rest the speculations regarding whether or not the Federal Government would negotiate with Boko Haram, as the president yesterday, in Paris, the French capital, confirmed that talks with the dreaded Islamic terrorists had, in fact, begun.
Buhari, who stated this while responding to questions from members of the Nigerian community in France under the auspices of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), said the decision was taken in view of the need to secure the release of over 200 schoolgirls kidnapped at the Government Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State.

Buhari commiserates with global Islamic community over deadly crane collapse in Mecca

President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with His Majesty, King Salman, the people of Saudi Arabia and the worldwide Islamic community over the tragic loss of lives in yesterday’s crane collapse at the Grand Mosque of Mecca. As details of the deaths and injuries sustained in the unfortunate incident unfold, President Buhari directed the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Embassy in Saudi Arabia to closely monitor developments and take necessary action to ensure the security and well-being of all Nigerian pilgrims.
President Buhari, according to a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, also urged all Nigerians to pray for the continued safety of their compatriots who are currently in Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj.
He prays that Almighty Allah will receive the souls of those killed in the incident and grant the injured speedy recovery.

Two Nigerian forwards, Odion Ighalo and Kelechi Iheanacho, were their clubs’ heroes on Saturday in the English Premier League.
Ighalo scored the only goal in the 59th minute as Watford got their first victory of the season with a 1-0 result against Swansea.
A happy Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh tweeted after Ighalo’s goal: “Congrats to Odion Ighalo as his goal gives Watford all 3 Points over Swansea.”
Incidentally, Oliseh left both players out of the Super Eagles squad for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania, which ended goalless.

Oshiomhole sacks four commissioners

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has terminated the appointment of four Commissioners in the State Executive Council.
According to a statement by Prince Kassim Afegbua, Special Adviser, Media and Public Affairs, those affected in the exercise, which is in line with government’s commitment to strengthen the system towards optimal performance are:
*Chief Lucky James, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs;
*Mrs. Maigida Blessing, Commissioner for Women Affairs;
*Mr. Patrick Aguinede, Commissioner for Basic Education
*Mr. Chris Ebare, Commissioner for Energy and Water Resources.
The sacked commissioners were directed to hand over all government property in their possession to the Permanent Secretaries in their respective Ministries.
The Governor expressed his appreciation to the former Commissioners for their services to the state and wishes them well in their future endeavours.

NSC bans Okagbare-Ighoteguonor from Rio 2016 Olympics

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has banned African and Commonwealth 100 and 200 metres champion, Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor, from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. This is the fall-out of her refusal to run for Nigeria in the 200m event at the just concluded IAAF World Championship in Beijing, China, as well as opting out of Team Nigeria to the ongoing All Africa Games in Congo. Okagbare’s problem may have started when she competed in the money spinning Diamond League in Zurich, Switzerland, last Thursday, a few days after she failed to show up for the 200m event in Beijing, despite appearing in the warm up area. She claimed she was injured.

Germany's vice chancellor said his country could take in 500,000 refugees annually for the next several years, one day after Hungary's prime minister called on Berlin to close its doors to thousands from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia who have poured into Eastern Europe in an effort to reach more prosperous nations.

She was rescued from a sinking dinghy in the Mediterranean. And minutes later she gave birth to a baby.
Had she not been saved by the Italian coast guard, she would have sunk with the baby.
The woman, believed to be a Nigerian, had been attempting to cross the sea on a rickety dinghy with around 100 other migrants and refugees when it began to deflate.
After being rescued by the Italian coast guard, the woman went into labour as the boat was on its way to the island of Lampedusa.
After giving birth, the woman was helped off the boat. A coast guard carried her baby in a blue blanket.
Both mother and baby were in hospital doing well The Mirror reported last night.

The Seme Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Tuesday said it generated N777.2 million revenue in August.
The spokesman for the command, Mr Selechang Taupyen, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Seme that the revenue figure was N146 million higher than the N631 million generated in July.
“In the month of August, we generated much more than the previous month because trading activities were a bit higher.
“Since we are approaching the end of the year, our revenue generation would get higher and we will definitely meet up to the monthly target of N1.1 billion,’’ he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his administration will undertake a review of Nigerian foreign missions to determine those that are really essential.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said Buhari would soon set up a presidential committee to carry out the review.

UNTIL August 11, 2015 when President Muhammadu Buhari ordered stoppage of multiple accounts, the Federal Government had, for at least 48 years, breached its own rules on collection and management of national revenues.
Beginning with the Oliver Lyttleton Constitution, the 1954 document that conferred the status of a federation on Nigeria, the central government has always been mandated to operate a single revenue account for the country.
Forty-five years after, Section 162, sub-section 1 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) states: “The Federation shall maintain a special account to be called ‘the Federation Account’ into which shall be paid all revenues collected by the Government of the Federation, except the proceeds from the personal income tax of the personnel of the armed forces of the Federation, the Nigeria Police Force, the ministry or department of government charged with responsibility for Foreign Affairs and the residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.”

Germany's foreign intelligence agency BND has collected evidence of mustard gas use by the Islamic State group.

German daily Bild reported Monday that BND intelligence agents collected blood samples from Kurds who were injured in clashes with IS.

It quoted BND chief Gerhard Schindler as saying that the agency has "information that IS used mustard gas in northern Iraq."

Chancellor Angela Merkel has said the "breathtaking" flow of migrants into Germany will "occupy and change" the country in the coming years.

She said Germany would speed up asylum procedures and build extra housing, but called on other EU states to help.
French President Francois Hollande said quotas for EU countries to relocate 120,000 migrants were being planned and that France would take 24,000. Meanwhile, the flow of migrants across Europe shows no sign of easing.
On Monday, large numbers of people were reported to be streaming into Hungary across its southern border with Serbia.

The Nigerian Immigration Service has directed former Nigerian public office holders to immediately surrender official and diplomatic passports issued to them while they were in office.
The action, officials say, is based on the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The categories of officials affected by the directive are former governors, former ministers, former senators, former members of the House of Representatives, and former members of state Houses of Assembly.

Africa’s biggest donor-The Dangote Foundation-has donated N100million to support the Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs) affected by the Boko Haram insurgency in the North East of Nigeria.

The Foundation in a statement said the pledge was announced at an Advocacy and Fund Raising gathering organized by the Daily Trust Newspaper in Abuja.

The statement quoted the Chief Executive Officer of the Dangote Foundation, Mrs Zouera Youssouffou to have described the donation as part of the gesture of the founder of the Dangote Group-Aliko Dangote-whom she said has been passionate about the plight of the IDPs.

While extolling the Daily Trust Newspaper for the effort, she said the Dangote Foundation has been involved in similar donations in the recent past.

The Nigerian Medical Association yesterday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ban all oversea medical treatment for political office holders and other government officials.

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA. Lagos State chapter made this call at a press briefing held to mark the Association’s General Meeting/Scientific conference in Lagos .

The Chairman of the NMA Lagos chapter, Dr. Tope Ojo who further urged the president to issue directives to the heads of various government agencies in the country to ensure that the policy is implemented immediately without default by government officials and political office holders.

Ojo stressed that public office holders still use public funds to pay for medical treatment in India, the United Kingdom and the United States for ailments that can be handled effectively in local health facilities.

The number of refugees and migrants worldwide has assumed alarming proportions with concerned agencies at gape as to what solutions lay ahead.

At the last count, more than 300,000 refugees and migrants have used the dangerous sea route across the Mediterranean so far this year with almost 200,000 of them landing in Greece and a further 110,000 in Italy.

The UN refugee agency, revealing the latest statistics in Geneva recently, said this represents a large increase from last year, when around 219,000 people crossed the Mediterranean during the whole of 2014.

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday sentenced 30 women to six weeks imprisonment for prostitution.

Prediction by the National Metrological Agency that many communities will experience flood this year has become a reality, as over 100 towns and villages have been submerged in Adamawa state.

Investigation by People’s Daily in Yola revealed that, 27 villages were flooded in Demsa Local Government Area in the state, leaving a four year old girl dead while houses and farmlands with unripe products were destroyed completely.

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS), Pathfinder, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, seems to have declared war on illegal refining sites, following its destruction of illegal bunkering and refining sites in the state almost two weeks ago.

A Muslim flight attendant is suing an airline after she was suspended from her job for refusing to serve alcohol. Charee Stanley was an employee at ExpressJet for three years. After converting to Islam she found out that sharia law forbids her from serving alcohol to others, as well as drinking it.
She subsequently informed her supervisor of the problem in June, and was told to come to an arrangement with a colleague to allow passengers to get their drinks. However, after a steward filed a formal complaint about her, she was suspended from the airline in August.

Super Eagles Captain and goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, who just lost his mother has exclusively told us that he can not be “Fighting” his superiors, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as well as the Super Eagles coaches with his late mom yet to be committed to mother earth and while he is still yet to come to terms with the turn of event.
