Senate okays electronic voting, card reader for INEC


In a fresh amendment to the Electoral Act, the Senate has introduced the use of electronic voting in elections.Section 52 (2) of the amendment passed by the Senate yesterday reads: “The commission shall adopt electronic voting in all elections or any other method of voting as may be determined by the commission from time to time.”

Rohr urges NFF to clear Chelsea’s Ola Aina for Super Eagles


Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr has asked the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to ensure that Chelsea’s Ola Aina is ready to play for the country in the Cameroon 2019 African Nations Cup qualifier against South Africa in June.
Nigeria will take on South Africa in June in the AFCON 2019 qualifiers, before playing back-to-back games against Cameroon when the World Cup 2018 qualifiers resumes in August, and Rohr is hoping Aina would have been cleared before the games, reports owngoalnigeria.com.

The death of a former Super Eagles Coach, Paul Hamilton, has been confirmed.
The 75-year-old coach died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, on Thursday.
The Nigeria Football Federation has paid glowing tributes to the former Nigeria player and coach, who died after a protracted illness.

Body of missing Indonesian man found inside giant python


An Indonesian man, who had not been seen since the weekend, was found inside a 23ft (7m)-long python. Villagers on the island of West Sulawesi had the horrific task of cutting open the giant snake's stomach to retrieve the body.
Akbar was last seen on Sunday (26 March) before he left to harvest palm oil in the remote village. When his friends and neighbours realised he did not return home by the end of the day, they began searching for him.

Herdsmen invade Prison Farm Centre in Benue, kill inmate



The Benue Prisons Service on Monday confirmed that herdsmen invaded its Jato-Aka Farm Centre and killed an inmate, one Tersoo Agidi.
ASP Stephen Nwanchor, Public Relations Officer, Benue Prisons Service, said  in Makurdi that the incident took place, on Saturday, at the farm centre.

Boko Haram raids stoke fear of fresh attacks


Kano (Nigeria) (AFP) - Boko Haram Islamists raided a village in northeast Nigeria, in the latest rampage to steal food and medical supplies, as fears grew of more attacks, locals and security personnel said on Sunday.
Scores of fighters loyal to the faction headed by Abu Musab Al-Barnawi stormed Sabon Garin Kimba, some 140 kilometres (88 miles) southwest of the Borno state capital Maiduguri.

Firm complains to Senate about Customs theft

Motor Vehicle Network International, an automobile security engineering firm, has taken a matter of theft against the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) to the Senate.
The firm which is demanding N5 billion compensation, claimed that the Vehicle Registration System of the NCS is “an adulterated version” of its intellectual property it tagged “Vehicle Duty Smart Card (VDC) and Vin data revalidation programme”.
Group Managing Director of the firm, Mohammed Kabir Usman, in the petition obtained by Daily Sun, said the proposed platforms were first submitted to the management of NCS and the Federal Ministry of Finance in 2005/2006 and re-submitted to the Col. Hameed Ali-led NCS on S‎eptember 2, 2015.

A baby girl born with four legs and two spines is thriving after reconstructive surgery at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois, saved her life.
Dominique, a 10-month-old from the Ivory Coast of Africa, was born with what is known as a parasitic twin, where the bottom half of her twin’s not-fully-developed body - including waist, legs and feet - protruded from her neck and back, according to the hospital.

Vanguard gathered that the medical practitioner, who was without a life-jacket, jumped into the lagoon at about 4: 30 pm. When our correspondent visited the scene of the tragedy, it was gathered that the victim jumped into the lagoon between Adekunle and Adeniji end of the Third Mainland Bridge.

African football can’t be managed by bandits, says new CAF president

Issa Hayatou’s 29-year reign as head of the Confederation of African Football came to an end Thursday, after Madagascar’s Ahmad Ahmad beat him in CAF’s presidential election.
Mr. Ahmad picked up 34 votes while Mr. Hayatou polled 20.
“I’m not a candidate who will serve his personal interests,” Ahmad said in a statement before the voting at a congress in Ethiopia took place, according to the News Agency of Nigeria. “African football cannot be managed by bandits,”

The president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, has won a seat into the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football.
Mr. Pinnick defeated incumbent Moucharafou Anjorin of Benin Republic by 32 to 17 votes at the CAF elective congress in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Bundles of banknotes seized at Nigeria's Kaduna airport


Large sacks containing bundles of "crispy" banknotes worth a total of $155,000 (£130,000) have been seized at a Nigerian airport, officials say.
The cash, in the local naira currency, was found near Kaduna airport's check-in and was still in sealed packs.

FG directs NFF to back Hayatou for CAF post


Nigeria’s government has ordered the head of the country’s football association to back current CAF president Issa Hayatou of Cameroon in his re-election bid, a senior official said Monday.
The decree from on high came despite Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick having publicly come out in support of Hayatou’s main challenger, Ahmad Ahmad.
Pinnick’s backing for Madagascar’s Ahmad has put him at loggerheads with the NFF, the country’s sports minister Solomon Dalung, and Nigerian members of CAF’s executive committee.

Scientists grow potato under Mars-like conditions in Peru


Potatoes on Mars? Scientists are reporting promising results growing the tuber under conditions that mimic the Red Planet in an experiment in Peru linked to US space agency NASA.
“Preliminary results are positive,” the International Potato Center (CIP) said this week after a potato grew under simulated Mars atmospheric conditions in an experiment in Lima.
The CIP, in a report, said a potato was planted in a specially constructed CubeSat contained environment built by engineers from the University of Engineering and Technology in Lima.

California gives green light to self-driving car tests


The US state of California is easing its rules for autonomous car testing, by allowing testing of vehicles in which there is no human driver.
The new rules have yet to be submitted for public consultation, with a final version expected by the end of the year, according to its Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) .
“These rules expand our existing autonomous vehicle testing program to include testing vehicles where no driver is present,” said DMV Director Jean Shiomoto.
“This is the next step in eventually allowing driverless autonomous vehicles on California roadways.”

Osinbajo remains Acting President, says Buhari


Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday said he will not resume power immediately and instead leave his deputy in charge after returning from nearly two months’ medical leave in Britain.
A Nigerian Air Force jet carrying the 74-year-old landed at the airport in the northern city of Kaduna at about 7:40 am (0640 GMT). He was then flown by helicopter to Abuja.
In the capital, the head of state, looking gaunt in a billowing black kaftan, stepped off the helicopter and walked across the tarmac to be greeted by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Ex-Governor of Bendel State, Samuel Ogbemudia dead



Former Military Governor of defunct Bendel State (now Edo and Delta states), Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia is dead.
He passed away Friday morning in Benin, the Edo State capital. Ogbemudia was aged 85.
The retired officer, politician and sports promoter had been ill, and was said to be unable to stand on his feet.
Dr. Ogbemudia was born September 17 1932.

A Nigerian High Court on Monday convicted and jailed a former state governor for corruption.
Bala James Ngilari of northeastern Adamawa state was found guilty of improperly awarding a 167 million-naira ($1 billion) contract to buy vehicles during his seven-month stint as governor that ended in 2015.

A former governor of Nigeria’s central bank has led renewed calls for the Nigerian government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of a pro-Biafra separatist group.
Charles Soludo, who led the Central Bank of Nigeria from 2004-09, made the call at a press conference in the Nigerian capital Abuja Tuesday, Nigeria’s Premium Times reported.
“We demand the urgent release of Nnamdi Kanu, his colleagues and all prisoners of conscience, as part of the process of the search for national cohesion and building a new Nigeria,” said Soludo.
