Former Liverpool and West Ham star Rigobert Song has woken from his coma but is still fighting for his life after suffering a stroke.
The 40-year-old, who is former Arsenal man Alex Song's uncle, was rushed to hospital in Cameroon after suffering from a brain aneurysm and was in a critical condition, report the Liverpool Echo.
But reports from his homeland on Tuesday suggest Song is now out of a coma and is breathing on his own without oxygen ventilator machines.
Song joined Liverpool for £2.7m in January 1999, but played just 35 times for the Reds before leaving for West Ham United in November 2000.
He also played for Galatasaray, Koln, Lens, Metz and Trabzonspor, winning 137 caps for Cameroon, including a gold medal at the 2000 Olympics.
Song is currently the manager of the Chad national team.
Former Liverpool team-mates Jamie Carragher and Robbie Fowler paid tribute to Song on Twitter, with Carragher tweeting: “Hope everything ends up okay”.
Fowler added: “Thoughts with Rigobert Song and family... hope he pulls through.”
