Catholic bishops rate Buhari low, president disagrees
Catholic bishops yesterday visited President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Rock where they lamented what they described as a glaring failure of his administration to tackle poverty, hunger, insecurity, violence, fear and unemployment.
The clerics, under the aegis of Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), were led to the Presidential Villa by their president and Archbishop of Jos, Most Rev. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama and the secretary and Bishop of Gboko, Most Rev. William Avenya.
Herdsmen attack Governor Smanuel Ortom;s fish farm
Suspected herdsmen engaged men of the 707 Special Forces Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Makurdi, Benue State in a gun battle last Tuesday.
The SFB spokesman, Major Olabisi Ayeni, disclosed this in a statement, yesterday.
He said the suspects were plotting to attack a fish farm, which belongs to Governor, Samuel Ortom.
Ayeni said two of the attackers had been arrested.
Ayeni said: “Troops of 707 Special Forces Brigade, Nigerian Army, on a routine patrol along Gbajimba – Iyiodeh road in Guma LGA of Benue State on Tuesday 6 February, 2018 arrested two Fulani militia who were suspected to be planning a dangerous mission,”
Osinbajo calls for creation of state police
The Federal Government said it cannot realistically provide security for Nigerian from the centre, explaining that Nigeria has been unable to meet the United Nations’ recommendation of one policeman to 400 persons.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who gave the explanation called for the creation of state police in face of rising security challenges in the country.
Osinbajo spoke at the opening of a two-day summit on national security organized by the National Assembly Ad-HOC Committee to review the current infrastructure in Nigeria, in Abuja.
Those in attendance included lawmakers from the National Assembly, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, ministers, service chiefs, Inspector General of Police, royal fathers, members of the civil society, diplomats, and other stakeholders.

Nigeria's Buhari attacked by predecessors
brahim Babangida has become the latest former leader in Nigeria to criticise President Muhammadu Buhari, as elections approach and the incumbent is yet to confirm he will stand again.
The man who once described himself as Nigeria's "evil genius" said in a statement issued on Sunday that "analogue" Buhari should make way for "digital" leaders.
"There comes a time in life when personal ambition should not override national interest," he added.
Babangida, who ousted Buhari as military ruler in a bloodless coup in 1985, later distanced himself from the statement, which he attributed to his spokesman.

Three Nigerian-American women are making history and their Olympic dreams have come true by being the first ever African bobsled team to qualify for the Olympics. The team will also be the first Nigerian athletes to compete at a Winter Olympics, when they appear at the PyeongChang games, which begin February 9.
