Liverpool got their Premier League campaign off to a winning start
with an enthralling
4-3 victory away at Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were sluggish before the break and Theo
Walcott was awarded a penalty following a clumsy challenge from
Alberto Moreno but the Englishman failed to convert his own
spot-kick.
However, Walcott redeemed himself just 69 seconds later with a
well-taken finish past Simon Mignolet who started the game at the Emirates
after an injury to new signing Loris Karius in pre-season.
The Gunners looked set to go into half-time with a goal advantage
but Philippe Coutinho, who had shown several glimpses of magic in the opening
45 minutes, brought the sides level with a stunning free-kick.
Liverpool flew out of the blocks in the second-half and the
pressure showed in the 49th minute as Adam Lallana fired home from a tight
angle to make it 2-1.
With
Arsene Wenger’s inexperienced centre-back pairing of Rob Holding and Calum
Chambers looking shaky in defence, Coutinho piled on the misery for Arsenal
with his second just before the hour mark.
Sadio Mane scored a phenomenal solo effort in the 63rd minute
but it was immediately cancelled out after substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
scored in similar fashion at the other end of the pitch just two minutes later.
In a breathless final 25 minutes, Chambers headed home to make it
4-3 but Liverpool held on for the victory in what was undoubtedly the pick of
the opening weekend of Premier League fixtures.
Arsenal really do
need to strengthen – the need for a new striker is obvious and due to the
injury problems suffered in pre-season it would be sensible to pick up a
defender. Yes, it’s frustrating not winning the title for 13 years – ask fans
of just about any other club. Yes, spending large amounts of money on match
tickets gives you a right to an opinion.
Arsenal were actually
pretty decent at the start of the match and the resilience shown to come from
4-1 down to make it a nail-biting finish shows there is character in this squad.
