Tuesday’s win over Barcelona is one of the few times Pep Guardiola could be forgiven for being at a loss for words, but he managed.
The ex-Barca man oversaw a deserved 3-1 win for Manchester City in UEFA Champions League play on Tuesday, one in which City overcame early frustrations to rattle its La Liga opposition.
Down 1-0 after 21 minutes, Ilkay Gundoganscored twice and Kevin De Bruyne converted a free kick as City kept its group hopes alive with a big win.
Count Guardiola, who won two Champions League titles as Barcelona, impressed with his new charges.
“(Barcelona) had an amazing 30 minutes, we had a lot of problems but our first goal helped us a lot. In the second half we created a lot of counter attacks. I am so happy for the guys, it is the first time we have beaten the best team in the world.”
Barcelona manager Luis Enrique said the first 40 minutes were “the best we have played on a stage like this against top quality rivals”, but Man City were barely bloodied and certainly not beaten.
Remember, this is a City side that made its first UCL semifinal last season under Manuel Pellegrini before losing 1-0 to Real Madrid, so the quality is there.
Nights like this should allow City supporters to dream big.
